Apprenticeships

SCOTT® liases with secondary schools and with polytechnics throughout New Zealand to gain an understanding of their course material, to endeavour to align it with the company's requirements. This ensures a consistent sound and practical learning experience for our apprentices on the job.

If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding career in machining, tool making or electrical, please register your interest with SCOTT. Useful background information on apprenticeships is also available from Skills4Work.

Our recruitment process generally starts around June each year in preparation for apprentices completing their courses later in the year. If you are interested in apprentice roles please submit your application and CV here.

Apprenticeship Programme

Apprentices are important to the overall workshop development strategy and are employed in the areas of machining, tool making and electrical. Five to six new apprentices are taken on annually. At any one time there will be 15-20 machining and tool making apprentices working their way through their training programme. SCOTT has trained unit standard assessors in-house and this is supplemented with external assistance.

SCOTT apprentices are required to complete an 8,000 hour apprenticeship and to complete the 302 credits required for the National Certificate in Machining and Tool-making Level 4. This can also lead onto the Level 5 or Level 6 Diploma programme.

Apprentices spend time in many aspects of the business including fabrication, fitting, machine shop surface grinding, manual milling, manual turning through to CNC milling and turning, and commissioning for those that show competency in these areas.
